Interserve is an international and interdenominational fellowship of Christians committed to each other in partnership and for service to the peoples of Asia and the Arab World. Interserve England and Wales has placed about 150 Partners. Over 30 of these Partners work in England and Wales with Urban Vision. Partners use their professional
skills, such as in medicine or teaching, to share the love of Christ
with people in a predominantly Hindu, Muslim or Tibetan Buddhist world.
People have spiritual needs as well as material ones. Interserve works
to meet the needs of the whole person. |

The Intergrated Holistic Approach Urban Development Project (IHA-UDP) The project is based in the capital
of Ethiopia - Addis Ababa, and works with the poorest of the poor. They
tackle the problems of poverty in varying ways. Physical upgrading. IHA-UDP builds new houses for the community and also constructs communal kitchens and toilets. Primary healthcare. A Clinic is provided in the slums, which deals with AIDS education and offers feeding programmes for undernourished children, and prenatal and postnatal care for mothers and babies. Community Development. This is the largest section. IHA-UDP have community groups who meet to discuss and decide the direction of the project. They run kindergartens and support children at school. There is a youth workshop and training for young people in carpentry. A youth circus and musical group is also provided. A day care centre is provided for the elderly, and meals are provided for the housebound. In addition to all this there is a credit and saving scheme, to encourage people to escape the downward spiral of poverty. |
